Description

A one-of-a-kind handknotted wool pile rug in the Azilal tradition of Morocco’s High Atlas, measuring 5'0" × 3'3" and weighing 9.3 lbs. Selected for texture, scale, and exact-piece character, with final color confirmed by video before payment is captured.

Materials

wool, Hand spun Wool from High Atlas (Azilal-type), Morocco.

Construction

Handwoven as a azilal rug. Dimensions: 152 × 99 cm (approx. 5'0" × 3'3"). Weight: 4.2 kg.

Condition

Sound throughout, with no holes, thin areas, stains or repairs. The pile remains at full depth across the entire field, with no bald patches or crushing. Selvedges are firm along both long edges. The thick, plied fringe is complete and forms part of the warp structure. Variations between cream, buttery yellow and pale peach in the ground come from undyed fleece rather than fading or soiling.

Provenance

Attributed to the Azilal tradition of the High Atlas through structural and visual evidence: an undyed ivory ground with bright dyed colour interventions, medium-depth knotted pile on a wool foundation, hand-spun yarn and asymmetric, improvised geometry. Boujad was considered as an alternative, but this piece differs through its cream ground and unusually high wool density. No individual sourcing record exists because the rug was acquired as part of a multi-rug group. The attribution therefore rests on the characteristics of the object, and the piece is labelled Azilal-type rather than Azilal. Region: High Atlas (Azilal-type) (Attributed) Tradition: Azilal

Care

Vacuum using low suction without a beater bar, and rotate periodically for even wear. Shake out or beat gently to lift the pile. Spot-clean with cold water and mild soap. Use a professional rug cleaner for a full wash. Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
